History of Kimball

History of Kimball | 2023 | acrylic on plywood | 8’ x 8’ | Kimball Middle School | Kimball, South Dakota

History of Kimball is organized around a cross–quilt pattern that symbolizes the town’s first settlers, including the Hutterite Colony. Woven throughout the design are references to community celebrations, agricultural history, the railway system, Native American symbolism, school pride, and the Kimball Veterans Memorial. Bold color fields, rhythmic line work, and interlocking geometric sections guide the viewer across the mural, allowing each vignette to function as both an individual story and part of a larger, shared history. Together, these elements create a visual narrative that honors Kimball’s past while reinforcing the interconnectedness of its community.

Thank you to Kimball Public School students, School District Superintendent Dr. Chris Noid, Principal Matt Dykstra, PreSchool/Jr Kindergarten Teacher Stephanie McCord, Kimball historian Wayne Woodraskaw and the South Dakota Arts Council.
